WWF - Degenerates

WWF - Are You Ready?

This is not a post about Degeneration X or any wrestling item. It's been years since I cared about that sort of thing. While it was a bit funny for the time, it grew old quickly. No. This is all about the smack down something else is getting. You see, WWF used to be two things, the World Wrestling Federation as well as World Wildlife Federation.. two things that don't have much to do with each other, right?

For the most part you can get behind the World Wildlife Federation. Who doesn't like cute animals, right? A couple years back the Wrestling WWF lost their rights to call themselves that and had to change names to WWE. Way to add a small black mark to your lettering. But that's neither here nor there. The fact remained that WWF was not as extreme as PETA or any other company that had the same sort of mentality of going balls out to save the planet, animal, women's rights, etc.

Then I come across this piece:

"If we look after the planet better, tsunamis will stop happening" Great image, good point, poor implication. Maybe now we need to take the offensive here and destroy the planet. Then it wont be able to hurt us anymore, right? That's some pretty hardcore shit right there. I have to say, New York is pretty much fucked.

Much like Christmas, it seems that the 9/11 season starts earlier and earlier every year. I think we'll start getting ready for 9/11 come a few months earlier. I'll start to see the 9/11 holiday streamers go on sale. While I'm one to mock just about everything, I do see this as a little bit in poor taste. To get me to think something is in poor taste, then it really has to be pretty bad.

It's not like this is how anyone knows the WWF. They aren't ruthless people. When I was a kid I had this WWF album with stickers of endangered animals and they were all right in my book.

So to see them put out a poster with planes flying into all of New York City in there.. now that's gotta be some hardcore craziness going on at the organization. I suppose this was too good to be true, as WWF just released this press release.
“WWF strongly condemns this offensive and tasteless ad and did not authorize its production or publication. It is our understanding that it was a concept offered by an outside advertising agency seeking our business in Brazil. The concept was summarily rejected by WWF and should never have seen the light of day. It is an unauthorized use of our logo and we are aggressively pursuing action to have it removed from websites where it is being currently featured. We strongly condemn the messages and the images portrayed in this ad. On behalf of WWF, here in the US and around the world, we can promise you this ad does not in any way reflect the thoughts and feelings of the people of our organization.”
Oh well. It was good to be true to think that this dirt existed, right? It is funny that someone thought they would be able to pitch their extreme ideas in such a fashion. Must have been some massive lay offs at PETA to get these sorts of resumes going around.
